The Claremont Conversation Online
and Related Social Software Research

The main focus of this talk will be to describe the Claremont Conversation Online project, which is under the leadership of the Social Learning Software Lab (SL2), a part of the School of Information Systems and Technology at Claremont Graduate University. The lab is co-directed by Lorne Olfman and Terry Ryan (who is the Dean of the School). The lab was established to do research to enhance the quality and productivity of social learning software (software that facilitates collaboration among groups of people with common interests). A number of ongoing projects are using an “action design” method to develop new features for existing education-based social technologies. The main project uses as its platform a social technology called Elgg, which is a person and community centered open source system and forms the basis for the Claremont Conversation Online system, which is being used extensively at Claremont Graduate University. The talk will also describe some of the other projects that SL2 has undertaken over the past two years, and plans for future projects.
