Teaching the Computer How to Learn
The School of Computer Science at the College of Management Academic Studies stands at the forefront of technological developments, offering an ever-evolving curriculum, including a specialization in machine learning.
The specialization in machine learning is of the best of its kind in Israel and abroad. Apart from the theoretical courses, the specialization program also includes lab courses, where students learn how to build practical learning environments, as well as a final seminar. Moshe Butman, Head of the specialization, emphasizes: "The field of machine learning has been developing at an incredible pace over the last twenty years. All the largest corporates such as Facebook, Google, and Microsoft have R&D units dedicated to machine learning.
One of the Most Attractive Fields of Expertise in the Hi-tech industry
Intelligent learning is applied when a computer program operates better than it did last time. "It is a purely mathematical field, but it has numerous applications”, explains Butman, "For instance, computerized sight, image searches – a computer that understands what I am searching for could pinpoint a specific image among a billion available images. We are already experiencing precursors to this. But in the future, we will have a computer program that will categorize images in complete accuracy. The same is true for the ability to send relevant ads automatically”.
Machine learning is also gathering speed in Israel, with many dedicated research groups and forums. According to Butman, what students learn in the specialization program will be essential to their future careers in the business world. “In recent years, many applications have required knowledge in machine learning, both in the industry and in research. This is one of the most attractive areas of expertise at this time. That is due to today's abundance of data. Everything is recorded but we have no way to analyze it all. The goal is for computers to conduct the analysis themselves”. He concludes.
